Sparta Helping to Bridge The Gap

HELLO everyone and welcome to my latest monthly column for The Northern Echo.

When I look back at these columns over the past year, I’m reminded of the diversity of the kind of assignments we are given at Sparta.

Every time the phone rings, something new comes in for us to deal with, and that variety is one of the things I love about running the company.

For example, we were recently called in to protect a construction development at Queen Alexandra Bridge, in Sunderland. Our job was to deter people from climbing up the scaffolding and using it as a base to jump into the water below.

It breaks my heart to think that people are in such deep despair that they would contemplate taking their lives, but mental illness is a growing problem, made worse by the challenges presented by the pandemic.

I’m pleased to say that officers from our 24/7 response team were called twice within the last month after our CCTV systems picked up intruders. We immediately called the police, and the relevant action was taken.

Often, Sparta officers act as mediators between our clients and the police – providing assistance, nipping problems in the bud, and giving reassurance during difficult situations.

We see ourselves as important partners – bridging the gap.

Farm Security NFU Survey

A NEW survey by the NFU shows that over the past 12 months, one in three farmers has been a victim of crime, with Yorkshire farmers spending more than the national average on crime prevention measures.

The NFU says it is, therefore, crucial that candidates in the forthcoming Police & Crime Commissioner elections commit to prioritise rural crime as a strategic objective.

The survey, carried out by the NFU with nearly 2,000 farmers across the country, highlighted the extent to which rural areas are being actively targeted by criminals. It also focused on the cost of crime to farm businesses, how often crimes are reported and how farmers feel about the police response as well as how much farmers are spending on crime prevention.

Nationally, farmers reported facing average losses of £4,400 as a result of rural crime and nearly 60 per cent of respondents said they believed crime levels were increasing.

Reporting levels were good, with 60 per cent saying they reported the most recent incident to the police. But, of those that failed to do so, three out of five said it was because no police response was expected. While more than half of respondents felt that insufficient police resource was devoted to tackling rural crime, a slight majority (53 per cent) felt that the police had taken sufficient action when they reported the most recent crime.

“The impact of crime on farms across our patch is the most common problem farmers raise with us time after time,” said NFU North East Regional Director, Adam Bedford.

Sparta Security Supports Ben Houchen

Having had a lot of experience in professional boxing, I think I know a winner when I see one and, in my book, Ben Houchen has done a brilliant job as the elected Mayor of Tees Valley.

People might say I shouldn’t get involved in politics, but I’ve never been one to sit on the fence. To me, it’s not about whether someone’s Conservative, Labour, Liberal or whatever else. It’s about what they do, and the difference they make, and Ben Houchen’s track record is there for all to see.

He’s done what he promised by getting Teesside Airport going again, successfully campaigned for Freeport status for the Tees Valley, and has made huge progress in putting plans in place to bring the site of the Teesside steelworks back to life.

Apart from that, he always finds the time to reply to emails – and that earns my respect. He’s always out and about, clearly works hard, and I reckon he deserves to be re-elected on May 6 – irrespective of what political party he represents.

Although the weather was vastly different to last year, Richmond Council still called upon Sparta to provide security at this very popular North Yorkshire beauty spot that attracts visitors and walkers in all weathers. Our task was to ensure that visitors stayed safe, enjoyed their visit and abided by the social distancing rules. Despite the cold winds and freezing temperatures, there were a lot of people enjoying the fresh air and relative freedom coming out of lockdown and the weekend passed without any incidents.

Whilst the population is facing a significant threat to life from this appalling virus, changes to the way we live and go about our daily lives have caused disruption in everything we do, and criminals are seeing this as a new opportunity. It is extremely worrying to see how quickly they are adapting to the unprecedented changes in our habits both at home and work. The criminals are finding ever more sophisticated ways to exploit the anxieties, demands social changes caused by the pandemic.

As the pandemic measures begin to relax, we can’t afford to be complacent as crime will continue to evolve and adapt. However, it is likely that some trends will continue, and we need to stay vigilant:

· Review your security system – does it need an upgrade?

· Don’t delay in fixing or replacing broken cameras or alarm sensors.

· Is your insurance cover adequate and up to date?

· Be proactive, not reactive.

S parta received a call recently to protect plant machinery at a property that was being demolished. There is only one piece of equipment on site. We placed a security guard there. The area is in a remote location but during the night a car pulled up and when they saw our guard sat in our vehicle they got back into their car and drove off!
This crew haven’t just stumbled across this piece of plant. It’s been recced during daylight hours !
ITS ALWAYS IN DAYLIGHT HOURS !
So, when your working and you see lads eyeing up your assets it may be because they are planning an attack!
Take note and write down a description. This is why on all entry and exit points you need a ANPR camera.

Keeping a track of injustice

H ELLO everyone and welcome to my latest column for The Northern Echo, reflecting on life in the world of security.

I wanted to start this time round with a warning about car parking fines, which aren’t always what they seem.

We had an incident recently in which a Sparta task force officer called in for a coffee at McDonald’s, at Newton Aycliffe, at the start of his shift. It was 5.45pm in the evening and he then drove off to monitor various sites that we’re looking after around the region. He called back at the same McDonald’s the following morning, just before 6am.

You can imagine our surprise when we were served with a significant financial penalty by a private parking fine company, alleging that our vehicle had been parked there all night.

Luckily, one of the great advantages of having vehicles fitted with Geo-Tracking is that we know precisely where all our vehicles are 24 hours a day. We, therefore, have all the evidence we need that no parking restrictions had been violated.

Naturally, we won’t be paying the penalty, but my concern is that not everyone has that kind of irrefutable evidence to fall back on, so they may feel pressured into paying unjust fines.

The message is to be aware of the danger, folks, and don’t take everything at face value.

BUSINESS UPDATES

WE were really proud to successfully complete the task of guarding the construction site for the new fire station in Darlington recently.

The station, in St Cuthbert’s Way, replaces one built in 1972, and we were engaged by construction company, Tolent, to provide patrols and CCTV protection.

Every job we are given is important to us, and we want to get the right results for every client. But we saw this contract as a special honour because it involves the emergency services – heroes who are dedicated to saving lives – and I’m delighted to say that there wasn’t a single incident on our watch. That makes me really happy.

Boarding Up Vandalised Restaurant

Vandals smashed up this restaurant in the early hours of the morning. The Sparta team was called out and were on hand boarding up the windows which took the best part of the day due to the number of windows smashed. The restaurant was empty and had gone out of business, so there was nothing of any value worth stealing.

Sadly this kind of mindless vandalism has become more common during the past 12 months as more stores and restaurants are closed for the lock-down or have gone out of business for good. It's a sad reflection on our society when this kind of damage is done for absolutely no reason other that to give the vandals some kind of sick pleasure.

Our team are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week and will respond as quickly as possible to ensure the premises are secured.

Cracking down on countryside crime

The man behind one of the North-East’s leading security companies has a New Year resolution – to tackle the rise in rural crime across the region. PETER BARRON talks to Francis Jones.

The plan is to launch ‘Sparta Rural Enforcement’ as a new arm of the business, on a three-month trial, to test its effectiveness in more remote areas. And, in order, for it to work, he is aiming to predominantly employ former police officers who have retired from countryside beats.

They will operate in unmarked vehicles, in designated criminal hotspots, at random times throughout the week, and relay information direct to the police.

“As the population increases, so in turn should the number of police officers,” says Francis. “Instead, they have decreased, so unless there is an element of privatization, we will see crime continuing to grow and vigilante groups being set up.

“Business owners are sick – farmers are sick – and I have no doubt that many police officers are tired of the lack of support with, sometimes, one officer covering a vast area.”

Guess what? The most lucrative type of car crime is not stealing the whole car, just the catalytic converter! Criminals are ripping out the anti-pollution devices from cars and vans because they contain increasingly precious and sought-after metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium - leaving motorists with huge repair bills. Damage caused by thieves frantically trying to strip them from vehicles are resulting in insurance claims of between £2,000 and £3,000, and because there is no third party to claim against, drivers using their polices to cover repair costs are also losing their No Claims Discount, and in worst case scenarios some vehicles have been written off entirely. Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas, and where possible, cover them with CCTV.

As the country is in virtual lockdown, there are more and more offices and commercial premises left empty. Just like COVID-19, villains don’t take a holiday or concern themselves who they attack! Seeing the Big Picture in the World of Security

Welcome to the second instalment of the ‘Safety First’ column for The Northern Echo.

Each month, I give the inside track on what The Sparta Group – the North-East’s leading security company - is doing to keep businesses and householders safe.

COMPANY UPDATE

What I love most about running Sparta is the variety of work that comes our way. You never know what the next assignment is going to be when the phone rings.

For example, we were recently called in by BT Sport to look after the security ahead of the unveiling of a stunning mural in Darlington, to honour the world’s first professional black footballer, Arthur Wharton.

BT Sport commissioned world-famous street artist Jay Kaes to paint the mural on the side of The Arthur Wharton Foundation building in Widdowfield Street, and it’s a wonderful tribute to a sporting hero.

Special credit has to go to Shaun Campbell, who has dedicated his life to recognising the importance of Arthur, who played in goal for Darlington Football Club, and was also the fastest man on the planet.

Having been born in Ghana, Arthur came to Darlington as a 19-year-old and Shaun has fought tirelessly to make sure his story is an inspiration to future generations.

Our job was to make sure the site of the mural, and all of the expensive television equipment, was kept secure ahead of the unveiling.

Our employee, Tori Creighton (below with Shaun Campbell) looked after this particular contract and was bowled over by the occasion. She wrote this on social media: “I have loved every minute, and I’m so grateful to have been able to be behind the scenes of pure magic and history.”

Not All Of Us Like Fireworks

Not all of us like fireworks!

Never set off fireworks near livestock, as frightened animals – especially horses – can injure themselves when frightened.

Remember, fireworks can also disturb wildlife so steer clear of known habitats like lakes with waterfowl and trees with roosting birds. Check bonfires for wildlife before lighting as animals like hedgehogs may be hibernating.

Pick up any firework litter after it has cooled down and dispose of it safely, as it can harm animals.

Before the fireworks season starts

P rovide your dog with a doggy safe haven. This should be a quiet area so choose one of the quietest rooms in your home – it should be a place where they feel in control, so don’t interfere with your dog when they’re in that area. Train your dog to associate the area with positive experiences e.g. by leaving their favourite toys there but not imposing yourself at any time. Also, use a variety of chew toys, e.g. stuffed Kongs and chews and swap them regularly, putting them away when not in use so that your dog doesn’t become bored with them. With time dogs can learn that this place is safe and enjoyable. So when fireworks go off they may choose to go there because they know, in that place, no harm will come to them and so they are more able to cope. It is important that your dog has access to this doggy safe haven at all times – even when you’re not at home .

When the fireworks start!

Close any windows and black out the ‘doggy play area’ to remove any extra problems caused by flashing lights. l Each evening before the fireworks begin, move your dog to the play area and provide toys and other things that they enjoy. Make sure that there are things for you to do too so that your dog isn’t left alone. l Ignore the firework noises yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don’t force them to play.

Security for the Oil and Gas industry

Managing security risks is an essential business activity within the oil and gas industry. The range of security threats posed varies in scope and intensity and companies should ensure they have comprehensive security awareness and knowledge. The result of an attack on an oil structure could be catastrophic from several viewpoints (casualties, financial, ecological, logistical) and is therefore one of our largest areas of concern.

Without consistent security risk management strategies, companies can become extremely vulnerable and could be exposed to an increasing level of security instability and unpredictability.

Almost every company facility has security guards – at access control points, reception areas, around buildings and in industrial areas. They are in usually in uniform and represent an image of the company to the outside world, to employees and contractors. And every guard is also seen as a representative and a symbol of the security function of a company.

Providing protection for these sites is generally enforced by providing a restriction of access to hostile intrusion at the perimeter of the site thereby denying access to the vulnerable parts of the site. A good security strategy is to imagine the unthinkable and to have a plan to deal with it. That's part of our security assessment process which we have used successfully with all of our clients over the years. Security is not effective after the event!

Richly deserved - VIP treatment for County Durham mum who catered for the elderly during lockdown

AFTER spending the long months of lockdown catering for others, Kim Clark has finally had the tables turned on her – and no one deserves it more.

In June, this column shone the spotlight on the magnificent job the mum-of-two has done for the elderly people of Evenwood, and surrounding villages, in County Durham.

When her events catering business, Kim’s Kitchen, was brought to a shuddering halt by the coronavirus pandemic, she wiped away the tears that initially flowed, and dedicated herself to making sure the old, the lonely and the vulnerable in her community didn’t go hungry.

She has now delivered more than 12,000 free meals during lockdown after appealing to the local community for food donations, and using her culinary skills to turn them into nutritious offerings.

Kim’s story was enough to move former boxer, and now high-profile businessman, Francis Jones, owner of the Sparta Security Group. Francis might have risen to prominence as a nationally ranked professional fighter – reveling in the name of “Fearless” – but those who know him will testify he’s soft-hearted.

So, having just acquired a luxurious black Bentley Mulsanne for use in his flourishing business, Francis arranged to pick up Kim from her home, along with her sister Claire, and personally chauffeur them to the upmarket Headlam Hall Hotel, where they were treated to posh afternoon tea.

“What Kim has done during lockdown is incredible – serving up 12,000 meals for people who might otherwise have gone without,” said Francis. “I just thought it was high time she had a bit of VIP treatment for a change.”

What made it even more special for Kim is the fact that she was married to her husband, Chris, at Headlam Hall 14 years ago.

“I started delivering the meals because there was a real need, and the response was overwhelming, but I didn’t expect anything like this to happen,” said Kim.

“I’ve never been in a car like that before – I felt like The Queen – and I’ve always loved Headlam Hall. It was just a lovely surprise and I felt really spoilt.”

The Bentley, which has the personalised registration plate 1 FCJ, will be used to add a new dimension to Sparta’s security services – for “executive protection and hospitality” – but Kim and Claire were its first VIP passengers.

Francis has already proved the doubters wrong by establishing Sparta has one of the biggest security companies in the North-East since it was launched 12 years ago, and now he wants to move into the VIP market.

“The business is flying because, quite frankly, we’re the best at what we do, and the Bentley isn’t a status symbol, it has to pay its way by attracting new business,” said Francis, whose company now employs around 100 staff.

Francis has also kept himself busy by completing the 3 Peak Challenge – Scotland’s Ben Nevis, England’s Scafell Pike and Wales’ Snowdon – in 24 hours, with former soldiers Dean Marsden, Craig Macks and Adam Kemp, to raise funds for the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust’s appeal to create a centre of excellence for cancer care. It’s a cause close to his heart because his mother died from cancer ten years ago.

“Life’s so short and unpredictable, and as a Christian, I know God wants us to help others,” he said. “That’s why it was so nice to be able to give Kim a nice time because she deserves it.”

For the record, Headlam Hall laid on such a fabulous feast that Kim and Claire were unable to finish all the cakes…so Fearless Francis promptly had them packed up to take home for his tea.

“Well, it would be wrong to let them go to waste, wouldn’t it?” he smiled as he placed them – securely – in the boot of the Bentley.

More Businesses Signing Up With Sparta Security

The latest Teesside company to join Sparta's impressive client list is Volvo, based off Portrack Lane in Stockton, who have undertaken Sparta's extensive preventative measures as well as signing up for the reassurance of the day and night patrols at their showrooms

The Sparta Task Force kept its entire Aycliffe base secure during the recent lock down, with so many premises closed. More than 100 guards and 20 Task Force personnel provided covert surveillance for properties and a number of businesses across the park implemented its bespoke services.

Logistics firm Stiller the latest to sign up for Sparta Security services

Sparta Security have secured another major contract to increase their Task Force patrols on Aycliffe Business Park. Stiller are the latest company on the park to sign up for the Aycliffe-based firm’s modern-day security expertise and former forces-led patrols.

Chairman Francis-Charles Jones is convinced Sparta’s impact on the business park in the year establishing its base there has had a major impact on crime in the area and that has been noted by the business community. Sparta’s close links to Durham Police helped secure a firm ring around his clients’ locked down premises, adding to the firm’s growing reputation. Stiller Warehousing and Distribution is the latest major firm to join the Sparta list and like any new company, go through stringent preventative advice after inspecting the warehouses.

Francis said: “We are providing security response patrols and guards for Stiller as they have just expanded to another area on the business park and our operation is expanded as well.

“We have a high-profile presence, a quick response and that’s the reason we have got the work.

With more than 25 years’ experience in security, Francis set up Sparta in Darlington and it has extended across the North-East.

Help us fight the battle against Cancer

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, often within 24 hours.

Sparta are never ones to walk away from a challenge, and they don't come much bigger than completing the 3 peaks within 24 hours! Our intrepid team of 3 led by Francis are being driven between peaks by Adam, our volunteer driver in a camper van which we hired as a support vehicle from Scott Stewart for the occasion, which is all the more poignant as the van is named'Elizabeth' after his sister who sadly died of cancer.

The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft) - twice the ascent of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, over a similar total walking distance. The total driving distance is 462 miles.

The three mountains are: Snowdon, in Wales (1085m) Scafell Pike, in England (978m) Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1345m)

Cumbria Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Andy Slattery said:

“Quad bike thefts have increased in the county and it is a similar picture across the country. We all have a responsibility that Cumbria doesn’t become an easy target for criminals.

“Often when the police become involved it is too late. We would urge everyone in rural communities to make it as difficult as possible for the thieves.

“As a bare minimum all farmers should ensure that the keys are removed and overnight your quad bike is in a locked shed. Where possible all the available options should be explored around marking and our PCSOs are trained to provide you with the information about the available marking schemes.

“Where trackers are fitted it is a significant help to the police investigation. Recently, where a tracker has been fitted it has resulted in two arrests.

Inspector Matt Hagen, of North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Taskforce, said:

“With the vast majority of people doing their bit to help stop the spread of coronavirus, it’s almost beyond belief that thieves would continue to prey on rural areas, targeting quad bikes and other high-value equipment.

“Fortunately, here in North Yorkshire, police officers work really closely with our rural communities, and people are used to keeping an eye out for one another. That community spirit, and great relationship between the police and the public, has led to three arrests and two bikes recovered last week.

“With lambing season in full swing, many farmers rely on their quads for their work at this time of year. And with restrictions in place due to coronavirus, it’s more important than ever that farmers can keep working to put food on our tables. So we’ll continue to target thieves who come to North Yorkshire looking to steal quads, and I’d ask people to continue to contact us with information about suspicious activity."

How can I secure ATVs and quad bikes?

The police have given farmers and landowners tip of how to better secure farm machinery:

• Always leave your vehicle locked and alarmed if possible

• Consider fitting an after-market approved immobiliser

• Park in a locked garage or other secure area if you have one, or in a well-lit open space if not

• Never leave the vehicle’s keys in the ignition, in the same outbuilding as the vehicle, or near your front door inside your home

• Be vigilant when using your vehicle for anyone taking an interest in it.

Stewards are being brought in to marshal a beauty spot after 100 people gathered there for a party.

Police attended Richmond Falls on the River Swale on Monday because of crowds flouting social distancing rules.

A man, 29, from Staffordshire was charged with assaulting a police officer and another, 30, from Catterick Garrison, was fined for disorder.

Drinks bottles were left and according to some reports, nitrous oxide canisters, known as laughing gas.

Councillor Helen Grant, deputy leader of Richmondshire District Council, said the North Yorkshire falls had been blighted by anti-social behaviour over the bank holiday weekend, with the actions of some "totally unacceptable".

She said stewards would be in place this weekend to prevent large groups of young people or anyone with alcohol gaining access.

Ex-military officers are becoming a familiar sight on Aycliffe Business Park

Proud to have once served their country, just as proud to wear the Sparta Security uniform, the exmilitary officers in the Task Force patrolling the streets of Aycliffe Business Park are becoming a familiar sight and deterrent.

Businesses who have signed up to the security and crime prevention experts, who are newcomers after moving into new premises on the business park, are already seeing the benefits. Sparta’s 24/7 presence is working.

The majority of the 100-strong Task Force are SIA-certified former service personnel who bring their recent experience in Iraq and Afghanistan to the streets of the North-East using the latest surveillance equipment, CCTV and prominent white vans.

You simply can’t miss Sparta if you hire them, yet it is simple methods which have brought the company, set up by chairman Francis Jones in Darlington over ten years ago, which have brought them success.

As the Task Force demonstrated recently when they were sent in to provide a nightly security detail for an out-of-hours education centre in Darlington.

“We’ve already built a rapport with staff and visitors, letting them know we’re always there.

“We looked at the building, identified the vulnerable areas and set up patrols in the area and we have a very visible presence which challenges anybody on site and keeps anyone who shouldn’t be there well away from the place.

“And that’s what we do on the streets at night across the area. We don’t challenge every single person in the hours of darkness, but if we see someone we don’t like the look of, we go and speak to them and find out what they’re doing. People have to have a reason for walking on an industrial park late at night.

“Most of our guys have been in the uniformed services, so they are used to being in uniform, dressing smartly, taking pride in their appearance and their job, and more importantly following instructions, doing the job and providing a report afterwards.”

Sparta’s presence at the Education Village is clearly reaping rewards.

Coronavirus: Sparta's Top 5 security tips

To be honest with you, I'm already sick of hearing the word 'Coronavirus' and I'm sure you are too. The very simple fact is that this brand new virus from the Corona family of viruses is not going away for the foreseeable future.

With Coronavirus spreading around the globe, countries such as Italy on full social lockdown and the U.S.A. more recently banning ALL incoming travel from EU countries. It seems before too long we may well start seeing some of these draconian, albeit necessary measures being implemented in the U.K.

So what could the next few weeks and months mean for your school, business or property's security requirements..?

These days it is far easier to work from home (remotely) than it was 20 years ago, for example. Many companies are already implementing this method and this will become more popular if/when the virus becomes more widespread. If the U.K. follows countries like the Republic of Ireland in closing all schools and limiting non-urgent travel and public events, you may well find yourself in a situation where your business premises may need to be closed for a period of time. (As of printing, this has not yet happened but the situation is changing rapidly from day to day).

Very much like viruses, criminals do not adhere to society's rules and like to target vulnerablilities within society to facilitate their tasks more easily. These criminals will be paying extra attention to the ongoing Coronavirus developments and will be looking at ways in which they can make some easy money. More people tucked away at home and fewer people out and about and in work will only make a criminal's job that much easier. The fear of being seen or challenged will be almost completely removed and we may well see more brazen criminality as a result.

If you switch on the news at any time of day you are bombarded with horror stories and glum economic forecasts due to the effect of Coronavirus.

This can be quite a worrying time for a lot of people and Sparta Security certainly doesn't want to add to this. However, with that in mind, here are our top 5 tips on keeping your premises and property safe...

1. Secure the premises .

Securing your premises if it is going to be empty for any length of time, be it one night or fourteen, sounds like pointing out the blatantly obvious. Let me tell you, we patrol many properties across the north east, 7 nights a week. We find doors unlocked, windows left open, keys left in company vehicles EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. In fairness, after a tough day at work, it is very easy to let your standards slip and this is when criminals pounce. Ensure all doors and windows are locked securely any vehicles left on the premises are locked also.

2. Use an alarm system and CCTV setup.

Whether you're using Sparta's monitoring system or simply have a decoy box and camera, stats show that criminals are less likely to enter a property that has some sort of visible security.

3. Lights, lights and more lights .

It stands to reason to have security lighting to combat intruders that generally prefer the dark hours to operate. Install security lighting that will effectively cover your property. Make sure nooks and crannies are illuminated as much as possible as this will deter would-be intruders and give them no place to hide. Also, timers on internal lights give the illusion that the property is still occupied (the old methods are the best!).

4. Check and secure the perimeter.

Make sure your perimeter fences and gates are regularly checked and maintained. Intruders have been known to spend several nights carefully compromising fences and gates to then hit the property on a chosen night, once the hard work has been done. Be vigilant for gaps in parts of the fence that are not easily seen and look for evidence of damage around weak points.

5. Join a business watch scheme.

Now becoming increasingly popular are Business Watch Schemes. These are community-based schemes that seek to improve business security by enabling local businesses to work together to crack down on crime. While some schemes are run by local councils, here at Sparta we have our very own 'Task Force' that patrol many businesses in North East and beyond. They share collected intelligence and are there to provide a mobile response to any alarm and CCTV activations whilst also supporting our on-site security guards should they ever need assistance. These schemes are very successful because of the sharing of information between local businesses that is collated and reported by our Task Force. A problem shared is a problem halved.

Schools Out: Sparta's tackling antisocial behaviour in the holidays

It's half term, some of us are tearing our hair out trying to find child-minders, etc and the rest of us are enjoying driving to work without the usual school-run traffic jams.

School holidays, however, present a unique set of problems for business owners and even schools themselves!

Calls to Sparta HQ for temporary cover increases significantly over the school holidays and we work closely with selected schools, colleges, and various business premises in local areas to provide peace of mind to premises owners and the wider community.

Home security and technology are increasingly linked. Using tech to secure your home is more common. Here, we present a number of tips to keep your home safe, including some specific tips relating to the winter period now that the snow is upon us:

Lock away your snow shovel. Although useful for clearing pathways during difficult periods, snow shovels are perfect tools for burglars to gain entry. Secure tools to prevent such occurrences.
Lock doors and windows. Regardless of how long you will be away from your property, it is important to keep your doors and windows locked. Most homes are fitted with UPVC windows which must be double locked. Ultimately, when you’re away from your home for long periods of time, remember to lock your deadbolt.
Have a burglar alarm fitted. Burglars will not even attempt to break into a property which has a visual burglar alarm outside. Although an alarm can be an expensive investment, it can be invaluable for protecting your home and deterring burglars.
