Spring can be a really busy time of year for homeowners. In addition to the usual spring clean, there is also a multitude of DIY, gardening and general outdoor maintenance to tackle. Our Spring security tips will help you to plan ahead and secure your property. During spring, people may pay little attention to home security. This is largely because of the light nights and people assume the risk of burglary lowers as a result. However, did you know that reviewing your homes security can be quicker than you think?
What security do I need to review in Spring?

Spring Security Tips – In The House

Check smoke detectors: Check your smoke detectors are working and make sure to do this at least once a week. Ensure that flat batteries are replaced and if your smoke alarm doesn’t function properly or is beyond ten years old, replace as a priority. The same goes for carbon monoxide alarms.

Check locks on windows and doors: Windows and doors that aren’t fully secure can be an easy point of entry for any intruder. Make sure to check windows and locks are in good working order and secure your windows and doors sufficiently.

Spring Security Tips – In The Garden

Consider using gravel for paths: Gravel makes noise when stepped on and this can deter burglars as they won’t be able to step over paths without informing people that someone is present. If you are worried about burglary in your property, consider replacing flagged paths with a gravel substitute.

Use fences and hedges: By using the correct height fence or hedge, you allow neighbours to see into your garden whilst preventing unwanted visitors climbing over. If you use a fence or hedge that’s too high, this can block views of intruders. Too low, and you are potentially inviting intruders into your property. Keep fences and hedges at a medium height.

Spring Security Tips – Maintenance

Check that your alarm is working: Making sure that your alarm is functioning as intended reduces issues and ensures that your system lasts a long time. Maintaining your alarm correctly may also help reduce your insurance premium. By having your alarm maintained by an NSI gold approved company , you can reduce your insurance premium as much as 20%.

Spring Security Tips – Clear Out

If you have recently made an expensive purchase, make sure to destroy the packaging. Don’t make the mistake of putting the box in plain view on rubbish collection day. You are advertising to thieves on your recent expensive purchase. In some cases for very expensive items, it could be worth taking the packaging straight to the tip.

Spring is a busy time of the year what with DIY, gardening and maintenance tasks to be completed. As a result, people may not consider the importance of reviewing home security, especially with the light nights. However, it is useful to review home security at any time of the year. There are several areas in and around your property that you can review to make more secure, such as the house and garden. Additionally, there are lots of maintenance and clear out tasks that can be completed to help improve your homes security. If you want to talk about this then speak to Sparta.

A NEW survey by the NFU shows that over the past 12 months, one in three farmers has been a victim of crime, with Yorkshire farmers spending more than the national average on crime prevention measures. The NFU says it is, therefore, crucial that candidates in the forthcoming Police & Crime Commissioner elections commit to prioritise rural crime as a strategic objective. The survey, carried out by the NFU with nearly 2,000 farmers across the country, highlighted the extent to which rural areas are being actively targeted by criminals. It also focused on the cost of crime to farm businesses, how often crimes are reported and how farmers feel about the police response as well as how much farmers are spending on crime prevention. Nationally, farmers reported facing average losses of £4,400 as a result of rural crime and nearly 60 per cent of respondents said they believed crime levels were increasing. Reporting levels were good, with 60 per cent saying they reported the most recent incident to the police. But, of those that failed to do so, three out of five said it was because no police response was expected. While more than half of respondents felt that insufficient police resource was devoted to tackling rural crime, a slight majority (53 per cent) felt that the police had taken sufficient action when they reported the most recent crime. “The impact of crime on farms across our patch is the most common problem farmers raise with us time after time,” said NFU North East Regional Director, Adam Bedford.
